Which Pump Can Fill a 1000L Tank in 10–15 Minutes?

Selecting the right pump for a 1000 litre overhead water tank depends on height, flow rate, pipe size and building floors. This guide compares practical pump options that can approximately fill 1000L tanks within 10–15 minutes under common residential and light commercial conditions.

What happens when reducing pipe size?

Match the delivery pipe size to the pump outlet whenever possible.

Example

If the pump has a 32 mm (1¼”) delivery outlet, continue with 32 mm pipe for most of the run. Reducing to 25 mm (1”) increases friction losses.

Reduced under flow

When you reduce from 32 mm to 25 mm:

  • Velocity increases
  • Friction increases significantly
  • Flow rate decreases
  • Filling time increases

Users may not achieve the promised 10-minute target or whatever time line mentioned.

Practical Recommendation

Use:

  • 32 mm (1¼”) HDPE or PVC delivery pipe from the pump to near the tank.
  • Reduce to 25 mm (1”) only for the last short connection, if needed.

Avoid long runs of 25 mm pipe for a 50 LPM system.

Typical Friction Loss Comparison

For approximately 40 metres of pipe carrying 50 LPM:

  • 32 mm pipe: around 3–5 metres head loss
  • 25 mm pipe: around 10–15 metres head loss

That’s equivalent to adding another floor to the building.
